Greetings fellow lookouts… I experienced my first (2-day) shift up at Gardiner this past Sunday and Monday. What a treasure! Pretty solid fog cover mornings and evenings so there were a lot of beautiful moments. Thought y’all would appreciate this video I made (with a little Canon S95 point-and-shoot in Miniature Video mode.. 20x normal speed). Some nice stills in there too.

Link: http://tinyurl.com/tam-lookout

Here’s one of the still images… shot facing north so Polaris was right above the lookout.

Tamalpais summit, Gardiner Fire Lookout, facing north.

I look forward to more visual experiences (of the non-combustible kind) up at Gardiner. Next week for the full moon!

Enjoy…

PS: Don, we need some more small plastic garbage bags up there.

Just FYI for all lookouts: Twice now, the breaker for the lights have tripped at Barnabe. I re-set the breaker and all of the lights seem to be working fine now. If for any reason the breaker trips again, contact Don before re-setting to get an electrician up here to take a look at it. The breaker is located in the outside double doors under the carport. Please read the sign on the door before opening the doors (it has an alarm on it). As you enter the door, turn to the left and you will see a breaker panel on the east wall. It is breaker #5 that trips.

It has been suggested that it would be nice to have a biography on each volunteer to go with their picture on this website. If you would, please take the time to participate. If you did not know your picture was on this website, you will find it by clicking on the “about” tab at the top of the home page.

Keep it short (one small paragraph) stating the city and town you live in, what you do or did for a living, any interests you have, and anything else you want to share. We will hopefully be able to post these along with your picture in such a way that you will be able to edit your biography whenever you want.

Please submit you biography to my email at dkeylon@co.marin.ca.us

Thanks, Don Keylon

It might be a good idea to return the door lock to the door shackle and lock it after you have opened the door at Tam. Recently a lookout took the door lock inside with them and a member of the public flipped the door bar so it rested over the shackle, which prevented the lookout from opening the door from the inside essentially locking the lookout inside. Fortunately this happened on a busy weekend and the lookout was able to ask one of the visitors that was around the lookout to correct the problem so they could get out.
